Been going here for years. Not the same since original owners started the chain. But today Lissette was a delight and made my day which started out terrible. Just wish Keith and Kathy Layton still owned the chain or I had the opportunity to buy it. The sandwiches seem smaller with the new owner!!!

This is my go to spot when I'm feeling down. It's a cheesesteak with soul. Sure it might be greasy, yeah it might not be healthy, and damn right it's a heart attack on an Amaroso roll. But it's still one of the best damn sandwiches in San Francisco and arguably outside of Philly. Don't expect great service or ambience, because that's not the vibe. Get your sandwich, stuff your face, watch a game, and enjoy the mixed crowd it brings together.

Excuse this right off the bat because I have a love hate relationship with San Francisco...so don't take any negative comments as being especially bad. But, I see San Francisco for what it is...a great and fascinating city suffering from a crushing weight of people struggling to exist in a crowded and diametrically opposed economic class status. So...upon first entering this place...I was surprised at how relatively clean and "newish" it appeared. From the outside, like much of San Francisco's businesses (in average persons areas) it looks run down and old. However, not the case here. So score a star simply for that. Upon hitting the counter to order...friendly staff that actually looked engaged versus the typical overworked, underpaid working posture and matching attitude many places have. Score a second star for that. Now to the food...and I'll keep it simple. The sandwich is skimpy on the meat and the frys could have been a few fries more. However, the meat in the sandwich was very tasty...the onions wonderfully caramelized and tasty! Also, the bread...excellent, crusty enough to have body and hold up to the juxiness of a cheesesteak...yet soft enough to easily bite through and not too dense that it was dry. So great bread. 2 stars for that. And...while I said the meat was skimpy...compared to Cheesesteaks out East...it turned out to be a much more filling Sandwich than I expected...and the portion of fries, actually perfect. I left feeling full without needing to immediately fall into a food coma. Again, as this is San Francisco...I won't give a 5th Star...no easy parking, cramped spaces, and generally restrooms are non-existant to hidden secrets. If you're a cheesesteak fan...this place doesn't deliver the Philly experience but is close enough to easily satisfy that craving. I'll definitely be back here to try their other offerings!

Back to the main one ! I've grown up with the cheese steak chain in the Bay Area. But specifically this location holds dear to my heart. 20 years ago I had my first cheesesteak ever ! And it was life changing. Lol I will crave this spot every so often and really have to stop myself and it forces me to do an internal check off list in my head. Do you want it? 1-10... will you you finish it? ( cause you know you'll want to king size it ... how are you goin to feel after you eat this ? It's a whirlwind of emotions going back and forth with myself. The deal breaker ? Gotta ask and see if someone else wants it too lol. If they say yes, then it's game on! I feel less guilty if I can share ! Any of the Cheesesteak Sammies are a good choice. Get the steak fries seasoned. Don't get the onions rings. I have been disappointed in them from the last two times I've ordered. ( hence the 4 stars ) Skip this ! Get the fries!

Growing up in San Francisco, this was the place to have a philly cheesesteak. If you're a local, you know what I mean. In fact, this the first place I ever had one. My friends and I used to like coming here after school and splitting a cheesesteak with my friends. Since then, I have been to Philly a few times and tried some of the more fancier spots in town. Cheese Steaks are a craving because of this place, I will always have fond memories and cravings for the Cheese Steaks from here.

I tried this spot on a whim since Beau brought it back for me on his way from downtown. I was happily delighted about the taste and quality of this sandwich. He always picks the best sandwiches in town and Cheese Steak Shop didn't disappoint. It takes Philly Cheesesteaks (or Chicken sandwiches) to a new standard of gourmet! Honestly when you consider the pricing, the 10" is the most worth. We both got the 10" chicken garlic sandwich and I didn't realize how well the onions and banana peppers paired with the chicken sandwich until I bit into it! The peppers are freshly cut, you can tell by the crunch they have. They are generously spread across the sandwich with cheese, garlic and chicken at the base. Make sure to eat this while it's still fresh out the oven because it just doesn't taste the same and yummy when the cheese gets cold at the bottom. The bun is amazingly soft and sort of a Italian roll taste & consistency which gave it a little sweet kick. I really appreciated their use of this because the main reason I'm not too big a fan of standard American sandwiches is with their use of sourdough and dry consistency breads for gourmet sandwiches. I was full and satisfied, it was the perfect portion for me. I do wish they added a bit more garlic flavor to the chicken but other than that, this is a good grab and go place for our future downtown trips :)
